I was scanning through Google pages about hot spring in Davao region and came across this so called Mainit Sulfuric Hot spring in Maco. This hot spring is unique, it has mini waterfall five meters high with 45 degrees hot water coming from no where. After reading on how to get there I decided to make a visit.
The Extra Size Jeep
It’s already 9:30 when I arrived in Tagum City terminal. Since the place is located in mountainous area of Maco ComVal I expect bringing snack and water is the best option. I ask around and found the Jeep going to Masara. This jeep is huge and not your typical jeepney in Davao City. It can carry up to 30 person plus long wooden chair in the middle design to extend it’s sitting capacity. I counted 1 hour and 50 minutes waiting time before the jeep was full aside from that, the jeep was searching and loading passengers cargo in all side of public market. One passenger bought 10 sacks of rice, others bought feeds, vegetables, construction supplies, furniture’s and many more. All items was place on top of the jeep. The volume of food supply this passengers are buying made me think the place must be very far away from the city.
It’s already past 12 noon when we finally head our way, our first stop is Mawab Terminal. The jeep was overloaded and running very slow, we stop multiple times to load and unload passenger. I vacate my seat and give way to older woman. I’ts almost 2:00 pm with no hot spring in sight, it’s only hot blazing sun that drain my bottled water as I sit on top of the jeep together with sack of feeds. The half cemented road is so bumpy, if you decides to visit this hot spring soon make sure to prepare your butt!
Mainit Sulfuric Hot Spring
Finally the jeep conductor signaled me that were near as he collect my 60 pesos fare. It’s already 3 pm when I set my foot in hot spring. I was so amazed seeing those smoking hot water running down hill. The place has different color surrounded by forested mountain. There are part which the water is lukewarm but in the right side where the smoking waterfall is located the water is really hot, I can’t drop my feet within 3 seconds. I find it hard capturing the best angle of waterfall while evading those hot water. This is the first time I visit a place like this, its so unique.
The place has no rooms for overnight stay, they only have small wooden cottage for picnic. It has small canteen but no menu for eating, you have to bring your own food. The place is very accessible for any types of vehicles. They have wide parking space outside. Overnight stay is not advisable because the hot spring area has no lighting. They don’t have swimming pool, only small size cave in the hot spring where you can enjoy the hot water like rain. The entrance fee is only 5 pesos so don’t expect classy hot spring.
How to Get There
From Tagum City terminal, ride a jeep bound to Masara then tell the driver to drop you off crossing hot spring, fare is 60 pesos . The fastest route is to ride a bus or van bound to Mawab then hire a habal habal going to Hot Spring for 200 pesos.
